Voluntary Arts Network

The development agency for the voluntary arts

Voluntary Arts Network aims to promote participation in the arts and crafts across the UK and Republic of Ireland. We recognise that they are a key part of our culture and as such they are absolutely vital to our health, social and economic development.

Over half the UK adult population is involved in the voluntary arts and crafts - those arts and crafts that people undertake for self-improvement, social networking and leisure, but not primarily for payment. They are wide-ranging and include folk, dance, drama, literature, media, music, visual arts, crafts and applied arts, and festivals.

The Voluntary Arts Directory of Amateur Art and Craft Forms

First edition

This directory – the first of its kind – lists dozens of amateur art and craft forms practiced. It provides a resource for individuals who are keen to express themselves creatively, but are as yet unsure of which art or craft form is right for them. If you are inspired by any of those featured in the publication, you can contact the relevant umbrella or lead body for further details of groups or workshops in your area.

Read the latest VAN briefings

134 - Welcoming speakers of different languages
This briefing offers some practical tips on how to welcome speakers of different languages to your voluntary arts group – as potential arts or crafts participants, volunteers or management committee members – and to help ensure that communication difficulties do not become a barrier preventing them from taking an active role in your group.

135 - Gift Aid and tax effective giving
Gift Aid is an easy way for voluntary arts groups that are registered UK charities to increase the value of their donations by reclaiming the basic rate of tax. This briefing will dispel some of the myths and show how easy it is to make the most of the scheme. Since we published VAN Briefing 54 in April 2001, a number of changes have been made to Gift Aid, details of which are also included here.

Please note: The new coalition Government has indicated possible changes to the Gift Aid scheme, but is yet to privide details of these. We will keep you updated on any further developments via the Voluntary Arts e-news.
