Voluntary Arts Network

The development agency for the voluntary arts

Voluntary Arts Network aims to promote participation in the arts and crafts across the UK and Republic of Ireland. We recognise that they are a key part of our culture and as such they are absolutely vital to our health, social and economic development.

Over half the UK adult population is involved in the voluntary arts and crafts - those arts and crafts that people undertake for self-improvement, social networking and leisure, but not primarily for payment. They are wide-ranging and include folk, dance, drama, literature, media, music, visual arts, crafts and applied arts, and festivals.

The Voluntary Arts Directory of Amateur Art and Craft Forms

First edition

This directory – the first of its kind – lists dozens of amateur art and craft forms practiced. It provides a resource for individuals who are keen to express themselves creatively, but are as yet unsure of which art or craft form is right for them. If you are inspired by any of those featured in the publication, you can contact the relevant umbrella or lead body for further details of groups or workshops in your area.

For more information and to order online, visit www.voluntaryarts.org/artandcraftforms.

136 – Getting charitable status – an update
Becoming a charity is one of a number of options for voluntary arts groups considering how they can most effectively benefit their participants and community. This briefing will outline the process of becoming a charity in each of the four nations of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

137 – Making the most of your telephone
Most voluntary arts groups own one or more landline and mobile phones. Although they might not seem very significant in the grand scheme of things, by following some of the quick and simple ideas laid out below, these devices can be used to save money, raise funds, and attract new members or participants to your voluntary arts group.
